What’s up #1

Welcome to a totally irregular “what is boiling” report service.

I decided I need a traditional enlarger for my medium format pictures that I made and will make. My thinking was that I believe I can make myself another junk enlarger, but I would need a medium format lens of some sort (i shoot with TLR so cannot use camera lens) and if I would buy that, I can buy an enlarger anyway. I take it as a needed experience, working with a manufactured enlarger. Nothing big, modern or fancy, just a very pretty, simple, cheap old Opemus 2a. It hasn’t arrived yet – fingers crossed.

I also decided I’m gonna make myself a darkroom timer. I hate touchscreen phones, they rarely do easily and exactly what I want and too often do very easily something I don’t want them to do. I honestly can’t believe we people have so much patience with such a needy device, that requires our full attention. Touch it for a little bit different period of time than it wants, and it refuses to do the thing. How many times have I watched people on video touching the damn button and nothing happens. Frustrating. I want a device, that has physical switches and knobs and when I smash it at some approximate place, it will do what I wanted it to do. I have some rough idea how it could come to existence, I’ll see what I can do and learn. I’ll keep you posted, of course; fear not.

Alec Soth made a new book. I know Alec from his excellent youtube channel. In this article on guardian he says:

When you’re young, you want to dive into something – that is the whole thing, that’s everything. The end result is going to fade. Nothing is going to last. What matters is the process. I’m trying to feel that again.
